750 words | #5
A neat little website for word-nerds that I've found helpful for getting through the first 750 words that stand between me and coherency.
I was reading some Figma documentation the other day because I wanted to upskill a little to better communicate with our team’s designer when I came across a website called 750 words. It’s a site that helps you get into the habit of writing everyday. I’d already decided to do such a thing before I found the website, so I took it as a sign.
What is 750word.com?
Everyday you get an email saying ‘time to write’, or something along those lines, and you’re dropped into blank editor. I’ll put some screenshots below but really you should just go to the site and have a look.
It’s 750 words because of the ol’ ‘Morning pages’ idea that says you should get three pages of writing done every day. Typically in ‘long hand’, in the morning, and about anything and everything that comes to your mind. It's not supposed to be edited or censored in any way.
The idea is that if you can get in the habit of writing three pages a day, it helps clear your mind and gets the ideas flowing for the rest of the day. It resonated with something I heard Neil Gaiman say in once about having a million words inside you that are absolute rubbish and needing to get them out before you can get to the good ones. Well, Neil the great is talking about life-time words, but maybe the same principle applies to daily words too?
The site has a little bit of gamification with badges and tracking and charts and stuff, and they give you neat stats about the speed at which you write and the sentiment you’re writing with. It’s not surprising that my tone and sentiment is usually introverted and angry in the morning  but good to get it out I suppose.
I’ve joined the beta which means after I use up my 30 days free, if I’m still keen, I’ll sign up and get some money off or something. I don’t know what it all means honestly but its a fun website and if I continue this habit I’ll be happy to fork over some moneys to keep the maintainers fed and the features coming.
So what?
I like the idea of using this ‘so what?’ section as something of a conclusion, so that’s what I’m doing. The answer this time is: so I was very glad I stumbled upon this little wholesome site, so I hope other people get something out of it too, and find it interesting
